Craftwork is one of the most symbolic activities of the Moroccan culture. In some parts of Marrakech you are able to see how the products are made just some minutes before being put on sale. You cannot miss the quartier des Tanneurs or Tanneries quarter.
The Tanneries quarter, located near to the Medina, is the main centre of leather production for the souks of Marrakech. This quarter and the enormous tanks that you can find there, create one of the most typical pictures of this city.
To get there you need to cross Bab el Sebbagh. Before arriving to the quarter you may be offered mint leaves to cover up the smell of the products used to treat the leather. Do you know what the technique of tanners consists of? First, the furs are submerged in tanks until they reach the desired texture; then, washed and dried. The last step is the tanning itself of slippers, bags, poufs or belts by hand.
It is worth making a stop in the Tanneries quarter to learn about this craft technique and why not, to buy one of these items. You can get there with the tourist bus of Marrakech City Tour.
Stop 15 of the Historical Tour route: Jemaa El Fna Square.
